Since I went back to work in September after having my second child, you know I’ve been hitting work hard. Sometimes one of my biggest struggles is wanting to do so many thing. As an entrepreneur, I always have ideas that pop into my head and it’s really hard for me to stay focused, find clarity and keep moving forward on the thing that I’m still working on and not try new things. I don’t know if any of you have the same problem but, at first, I was doing way too many things and I wasn’t doing anything well. So, I slowed down and tried to just focus on one project at a time instead of doing a million things. Having an avatar has really helped me on that and I want to talk about how to find your avatar, how to figure it out and why it will help you.
Your avatar is basically your perfect person that’s going to follow along with you. It’s going to be the person that your message really resonates with. Your avatar is someone who’s going to take what you’re saying or writing, use it and move forward in their business, goals or life.
How do you figure out your avatar?
You need to be super specific about your avatar. You need to figure out their name, their age, their personal situation, are they married, single or do they have kids? You are literally writing a story about them. It should be at least, 500 words. This is a quick example of my podcast avatar.
She is a girl named Allie, aged 27, who lives with her husband and is almost ready to have kids but not yet. She works full-time but really wants to start a better business and is currently weighing the pros and cons.
I have written more but I just want to give you an overview. What you really need to do is to ask your avatar the reason they need you, the books they’re reading, their activities, their hobbies and what changes do they want in their lives. Once you have a perfect avatar then you can flush out your programs, blog posts, podcasts, your product line or everything based on that avatar. You’re just basically putting them in front of you and asking them any question that you have and use that to figure out their pain points and ways to help them solve it.
Having an avatar helps to figure out what you’re doing and find your clarity and focus. I know it sounds silly. Even I asked myself why do I need to do this but once you have it written down on paper, you can then see what this person really needs and how to solve their problems. It’s going to help you so much, even if you think it’s a silly activity, definitely take the time to do it.
What you should do to find your avatar
Write down everything about your ideal reader/customer/listener. It should be AT LEAST five hundred words, flush it out, talk to them, ask them questions, like you are having a conversation with them and see how you can help them.
Ask them questions you want to know:
- What are your interests?
- What do you like to do?
- What is your profession? Are you happy there?
- What are your life goals?
- What are you working on right now?
- What do you do when you’re stressed?
- Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I hope this helps you. I’ll be talking a bit more about my Blissful Bites food podcast coming up soon, I’ll be recording my first episode and I’ll be sure to share it with you.
