What are you most proud of?
It’s SO easy for us to fall into the groove of…
- I don’t drink enough water.
- My meals aren’t portion controlled enough.
- I didn’t workout enough this week.
- My arms need some shaping up.
(Yes, some, but not all, of these thoughts are my own.)
We focus on the negative. Yes, we, as in me, too.
It’s funny because I try to come from a place of positive 99% of the time. It was my main philosophy when I was teaching… always talk in the positive. Instead of screaming, “Why did you just run sprint down the hallway at olympic speed?” I would say, “Wow I love how you wanted to get where you were going SO fast, but I would love for you to be safe and walk next time”.
I *may* do this with my husband too. For example: “Wow, thank you for getting the clothes out of the dryer! I so appreciate it, but next time, if they are still soaking wet, could you put them back in for a couple more minutes instead of hanging them over our (wood) dining room table and chairs?” (true story)
In order to do this, you just need to shift your thinking. Focus on the positive, even if it’s a SMALL, tiny positive. Whether it’s a child, husband, friends or sibling, I guarantee they will be more likely to listen to you if you say the positive part first.
Plus, it’s SO much nicer to hear people say something nice first.
So with all this positive talk, why the heck do we not do this to ourselves? Guess what, if you talk nicer to YOURSELF, you TOO, will be more likely to listen! I feel like it’s easy for us to say nice things about others, especially people we love and care about. Not too often do we stop and say, “YES, I DO rock!”
Let’s take a time out from the negative self talk today, I encourage you to do this kind of talk with yourself. Tell yourself what you are MOST proud of; from the smallest accomplishment, to the largest.
Instead of saying, I don’t drink enough water. Say “Wow I’m proud I really worked on increasing my water from 1 water bottle to 2. Now I’m going to go for a third.”
I’m proud of my dedication to exercise. I’m proud of moving to 100# on the cable machine for cable rows.
I’m proud that I feed my family AND myself healthy food everyday.
I’m proud that I started my own business.
I’m telling you to stop and be PROUD of yourself! You ROCK. Yes, YOU. Tell us how.
